We are living through challenging times. The news is filled with reports of war, unrest, natural disasters, and political division. Many are feeling uncertain, fearful, and overwhelmed by what seems like constant crisis. It’s no surprise if you’re feeling sad, anxious, or even hopeless. But in the middle of all this chaos, there is a path forward. You are not alone—and hope is still possible.

It’s important, especially now, to actively pursue joy and stay connected to what gives your life meaning. One way to begin is by using the formula CPR: Collaborate, Pursue Purpose, and use Resources. Let’s explore what that means:

Collaborate: Don’t Go It Alone

When the world feels heavy, it’s easy to spiral into fear and worst-case scenarios. Therapists call this “catastrophizing”—dwelling on what could go wrong until it becomes all we see. One way to disrupt this pattern is through connection. Surround yourself with people who uplift you, challenge your thinking, or simply bring you laughter.

Sometimes, just doing something joyful with others—like dancing, golfing, walking, laughing, or even shoe shopping—can create a small pocket of light in the darkness. I recently saw this happen at a church picnic when someone pulled out a double Dutch rope. Adults and kids alike jumped in, laughed, and encouraged each other. For a few minutes, everyone was united in joy. These moments won’t fix everything, but they are powerful reminders that goodness still exists.

We were never meant to go through life alone. Collaboration, community, and simple joy can help you breathe again when the world feels like it’s holding its breath.

Pursue Purpose: Remember Your “Why”

In seasons of stress and uncertainty, it’s easy to lose sight of what matters. But returning to your purpose can be deeply grounding. Think of McDonald’s—it may change its menu with seasonal favorites like the Shamrock Shake or McRib, but it never forgets its staple: the hamburger. Likewise, you need to return to your “main thing”—the core purpose that fuels your life.

When I was in grad school, I used to say, “I came here to get a Ph.D.” That simple reminder helped me push through countless hard days. Ask yourself: Why am I here? What really matters to me? Reconnect with your values, your vision, and the people you love.

Even when the world feels like it’s on fire, your purpose can be the anchor that keeps you grounded. It helps you focus on what you can do and keeps your eyes on the bigger picture.

Resources: You’re Not Alone

Finally, remember to lean on your resources. Start with spirituality—whether that’s a connection to your faith, nature, meditation, or a greater sense of purpose. It’s about grounding yourself in something beyond the chaos.

Also, don’t hesitate to seek professional support. Therapists can help you work through difficult emotions and make sense of what’s keeping you stuck. Coaches can help you set goals and move forward with clarity. Support is a strength.

You’ve Been Through Hard Things Before—You’ll Get Through This Too

You are stronger than you know. You’ve faced difficult seasons before, and you've made it through. This season is no different. With connection, purpose, and the right support, hope is still possible—even now.

So take a deep breath. Find your people. Reclaim your purpose. Use your resources. And above all, believe this: light is still breaking through, even in the darkest skies.
